“Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.'” – Lisa St. Aubin de Teran
Tonight is my last night in Nicaragua and I will admit I am not ready to leave. I wish I had one more week here.
My last day I said good-bye to Amalie with a few hugs. It was sad to say good-bye but that is what happens when you are traveling different ways. I'm glad I met her and Jacob because it made my time in Nicaragua even more enjoyable. I checked out of my hostel and headed off.
I spent my day at Apoyo Lagoon Natural Reserve and I am so happy I went. The view was breathe taking and beautiful. It's almost like a larger Lake Louise but a volcano and not a mountain.
I had to do a lot of walking to get there but I was fortunate again to be picked up and taken to the top by a local. I can't get over how nice the locals are and willing to pick you up and drive you as far as they are going. I was dropped off at the top and had to walk down but the 8km down was worth it because of the view.
On my way down I met some people from Canada and the States as well as Spain. We all walked and talked about places we have gone and are going. We sat out and enjoyed the view drinking some beers. I went into the water before heading back up. I was again fortunate to have someone pick me up and take me to the top where I went for a walk through the rainforest. It was a nice walk and I shared my lunch with a stray dog. I can't get over how many hungry animals there are, it makes me want to cry.
I did some more exploring before I caught a bus to the entrance. I walked a little and caught another bus to Managua. Here I had to walk a good hour or more to the Tica and my hostel. I have to be up at 3:30am and at the bus station at 4:30am so I got a hostel right beside the station.
I checked into my hostel and went for a walk to find something for dinner. I eat some local dish but it was way to much so I took my leftovers to go and gave it to someone who was asking for good on my way to the hostel. I knew I would find someone to give it to so I was not leaving it. I was right, a guy asked me pretty right away. I watch too many people waste food when they could take it to go and give it to someone who would appreciate a meal.
I walked back to my hostel and am writing this now before going to sleep. I have done a lot of walking the last few days and I will be doing a lot more the rest of this trip. I am going to start training for another marathon when I get home so my legs should be nice and strong.
I just wanted to give an update since tomorrow is going to be a little scary but I have to do it to get to my next Country. I have to get up at 3:30am to get ready to catch the bus to Honduras. I am taking a Tica bus so it is very safe. I can't have anything thing with me but my passport and snacks because my bag needs to be locked up on the bus to keep it safe.
